What the heck is "Exuma"?

Since we visited Exuma in the winter of 2012, we've both had a hankering to return. For those of you unfamiliar with the territory, Exuma is a district of the Bahamas, consisting of over 365 islands, also called cays (pronounced "keys"). The largest of the cays is Great Exuma which is 37 miles long and joined to Little Exuma by a bridge. The capital of the district is George Town which was founded in 1793. The flight from Miami to George Town lasts little more than an hour.

GREAT EXUMA and LITTLE EXUMA

We spent a week at Emerald Bay Resort - formerly a Four Seasons property and now a Sandals resort.

To get there, one flies to the impressive-sounding "Exuma International Airport (GGT)" from either Miami or Atlanta. Believe it or not, there is even a direct flight from Toronto! Despite its grandiose name, it's quite small:

MAIN (and only!) RUNWAY
When I first visited Exuma in 1975, this airport didn't exist. Air traffic was limited to private propellor aircraft and the airport was located near George Town itself. The latter is still in operation, but has been spruced up since those days:

Driving on Exuma can be fun for Americans .... it's often their first experience driving on the left. Some rental cars come equipped with a makeshift sign to constantly remind you where to drive!

KEEP LEFT!
Exuma is famous for its secluded, white beaches - some accessible only by a small boat. One beach in particular offers unique sights:
